  • Short Bio / Excerpt:

Alessandro Rolandi is an Italian multi-media and performance artist, curator, writer, and social activist renowned for his innovative work at the intersection of relational dynamics and social intervention. Born on April 18, 1971, in Pavia, Italy, Rolandi developed a deeply diverse intellectual foundation early in life. Before establishing himself in the contemporary art world, he pursued rigorous studies in chemistry and pharmacy at the Universities of Pavia and Siena. This scientific background would later merge with his creative passions as he expanded his education into experimental theater and filmmaking in Rome and Milan, alongside receiving a degree in art history from Christie's Education.

In 2003, Rolandi made a pivotal move to Beijing, China, which served as the primary canvas for his artistic expansion for nearly two decades. Immersing himself in the local cultural landscape, he began creating work that actively challenges existing hierarchies, structures, and spaces. His artistic philosophy favors decentralized autonomous actions and relational art over traditional, static object-making. By employing a vast array of mediums—including performance, video art, photography, text, and even traditional Chinese ink painting—Rolandi continuously seeks to engage directly with everyday reality and bridge cultural divides.

A hallmark of Rolandi’s career is his dedication to "social practice" art, highlighted by his corporate and community interventions. In 2011, he established the groundbreaking Social Sensibility Research & Development Department within the manufacturing facilities of Bernard Controls in Beijing. Acting as its director, Rolandi designed the program to introduce artistic radicality into industrial workspaces, facilitating collaborative projects between workers, staff, and residency artists to subvert routine and foster creative communication. This initiative eventually expanded globally to corporate offices in Paris and Milan, cementing his reputation as a visionary in corporate-art integration.

Rolandi’s extensive portfolio has earned him international acclaim and representation on prestigious global stages. His work has been featured in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Manifesta 12, and the MAXXI National Museum in Rome. In 2011, his collaborative performance piece titled "Something on the Way" earned him a nomination for the elite Alice Awards by the Global Board of Contemporary Art. Beyond his solo exhibitions at notable institutions like the Jiali Gallery, Rolandi has also served as a prominent curator, notably co-curating the 2016 Beijing Media Art Biennale.

Transitioning to Bern, Switzerland, Rolandi continues to expand his interdisciplinary practice by analyzing the socio-political and cognitive impacts of digital images alongside analog performances. Throughout his nomadic professional history across Europe and Asia, he has maintained a robust educational footprint, lecturing and teaching at institutions like Sciences Po Paris and contributing to global art publications. Today, his practice remains firmly rooted in a poetic-political philosophy of gesture and interaction, persistently exploring new forms of social and ecological imagination.
